Chart Analysis:

  1. Pandit Ravi Shankar:

To gain “lordship over the animals” is a theme of Ardra Nakshatra. Despite being a Hindu, and a Brahmin, Ravi Shankar was not even fully vegetarian for at least his first 77 years. Later, however, there were some changes, and he was actively involved with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) during the first years of the 21st century, along with his daughter Anouska (the image on the right is of his daughter Anouska). Maestro Shankar, a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India since the group commenced activities in India, was a Patron of PETA India. He is the first to receive this honour. Ravi Shankar’s work for animals includes breaking a lifelong personal ban on appearing in advertisements to appear in a PETA India prints a print advertisement with daughter Anoushka, as well as a TV public service announcement (PSA), to urge the Indian government to improve laws to protect animals. In the TV PSA, Maestro Shankar exclaims, “Let’s bring harmony to animals’ lives”, and speaks about the need for the government to increase the penalty for cruelty to animals, which is currently only Rs 50, even for the most heinous crimes against animals.

Maestro Ravi Shankar also sent a written appeal to almost two lakh people on behalf of elephants across India. “They are poisoned in Kerala, captured and beaten in Karnataka and run down by trains in Uttar Pradesh, as forests are torn down. Most zoos keep elephants constantly in chains and deny them freedom even to walk or bathe, while circuses and roadside shows force them to perform silly tricks out of fear of being beaten with an iron rod or hook”, he wrote.

Background:

Pandit Ravi Shankar had his Lagna in Ardra. Aradra is associated with animals, Shoot, Ready Aim (act first think later), Diamonds, Heart Trouble, Unconventionality and Taboo Topics. Pandit Ravi Shankar’s Bhrigu Bindu is in the 5th house of entertainment and children – along with the lord of Ardra, Rahu and retrograde Mars. His entertainment (music) was as unconventional as the Sitar could get via its use in American pop music. The birth of his children too was as unconventional as his music – some born out of marriages and others out-of-wedlock. His own birth too was unconventional as his father lived in England with a woman other than his mother and his father saw him for the first time when Pandit Ravi Shankar was eight years old!

Interpretation:

  • Diamonds are Forever – associated with Ardra: Other than being one of the most polished diamonds in the field of classical Indian music, Pandit Ravi Shankar, wore a large diamond ring which he said was manifested by Satya Sai Baba
  • Associated with physical work: Ardra is associated with physical work like running, dancing, hunting etc. Pandit Ravi Shankar started as a dancer with his brother Uday Shankar. He gave up dancing in 1938 to learn the Sitar – playing which is a tedious physical activity associated with Ardra
  • Defy Tradition: Pandit Ravi Shankar defied tradition in all ways. Pandit Ravi Shankar was 34 years older than his last wife. And that’s not the only anomaly, at least by conservative standards, in this relationship. Their daughter, sitar player Anoushka Shankar, was born in 1981, eight years before they were married. Two years prior to that, he fathered a child, musician Norah Jones, with New York concert producer Sue Jones. Panditji, who had famously said in an interview that he could “be in love with different women in different places. It was like having a girl in every port — and sometimes there was more than one!”
  • Hair standing up: Well, his unruly hair always seemed to be attempting to give him a ‘standing’ ovation! As he got older, his music got better. His hair seemed to realize this!

  • Sense of Humour: In this interview when Simi Garewal asked him about his rocky life (an allusion to his numerous dalliances with many partners) he says that fame brings along with it the qualities of a butterfly, of flitting from flower to flower! In his obituary link below (Economic Times), he is credited with a great sense of humour
  • Great gains via efforts:  The Sitar is among the most difficult musical instruments to master. When a western interviewer asked him why there were no western exponents of the Sitar, he said that it took a great effort even to master the basics of the Sitar
  • Human symbol is the head:  According to Odissi danseuse Madhavi Mudgal, Pandit Ravi Shankar had a charming and attractive personality and a marvellous memory. “You could contact him 25 years after meeting him and he would remember you.”

  1. Marilyn Monroe

(Doll sold as Marilyn Monroe ‘Animal Magnetism’ doll)

Background:

Marilyn Monroe’s ( 1926- 1962) Hollywood actress continues to be a popular cultural icon 6 decades after her death (Mercury in Rohini – the legend keeps growing). Her 5H has the Bhrigu Bindu and Saturn(R). Saturn(R), the Lord or the 8th H (misfortune, death etc.) and 9H of fortune. The 5th house is the house of entertainment. The Lord of the 5th H is Venus (the karaka for entertainment) in the 11th H of gains. Retrograde Saturn as the Lord of the 8H and the 9H would have led to reversals in her fortune and misfortunes.

Animal Magnetism (Ardra: Animal in a human chassis) refers to a person’s natural sexual attractiveness or raw charisma, can’t be learned, should be treated with caution and respected as a Sixth Sense (Ardra).

In her film “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” Lorelie (Monroe) is stuck in a porthole. Then she asks Henry Spofford III (George Winslow) for help. He says “All right. I’ll help you”. “I’ll help you for two reasons”. “The first reason is I’m too young to be sent to jail. The second reason is you got a lot of animal magnetism”.

Interpretation:

  • Adoption and parental issues/namelessness: Marliyn Monroe spent most of her childhood in foster homes (11 homes) and in an orphanage. She was born as Norma Mortensen. She was later Norma Baker. She modelled as Jean Norman and Mona Monroe. She checked into hotels as Zelda Zonk (good she did not live in 21st Century India where proof of identity and not ability to pay is more important) and into psychiatric clinics as Faye Miller. (Mercury associated with Lagna for name change to be effective – as in this case). Also, the identity of Monroe father is still unknown
  • Associated with physical work:  She was athletic. As a young married woman on Catalina Island in the early Forties, she studied weightlifting with a former Olympic champion named Howard Corrington. She later went tandem surfing with a boyfriend, Tommy Zahn, balancing on his shoulders as they cut through the waves.
  • Defy Tradition: Marilyn Monroe birth defied tradition as her father was never identified. Her death defied tradition as she apparently died – as the toxicological analysis concluded – of acute barbiturate poisoning (Rahu). Whether it was her marriage at 16 to avoid the orphanage or her cultivated ‘blond bombshell’ image – everything defied tradition
  • Hair standing up:  Marilyn always let her down! But, her hair always stood up for her!

All this even after her (original) curly mop was flattened down and dyed blonde!

  • Sense of Humour: To emphasize her “innocence” and “dumbness”, Monroe often used a breathy, childish voice in her films, and in interviews parodied herself with double entendres that came to be known as “Monroeisms”. For example, when she was asked whether she had anything on during the 1949 nude photo shoot, she replied, “I had the radio on”.
  • Great gains via efforts: From 11 foster homes to being one of the world’s best known divas. She made great gains through her hard work – which also killed her
  • Diamonds associated with Ardra : Other than owning diamond rings like this one, she was also

(A diamond ring from Marilyn Monroe’s collection)

well known for her song ‘diamonds are a girls’ best friend’

  • Human symbol is the head: French artist Jean Cocteau commented that her death “should serve as a terrible lesson to all those, whose chief occupation consists of spying on and tormenting film stars”. Her former co-star Laurence Olivier deemed her “the complete victim of ballyhoo and sensation”. Bus Stop director Joshua Logan stated that she was “one of the most unappreciated people in the world”. Marilyn Monroe died due to an overdose of Barbiturate. She, essentially, ‘lost her head’!
  • Rudra – the lord of storms: Beneath the veneer of success, her birth (unknown father), growing up years (11 foster home and an orphanage), career (spied on and driven to depression) were stormy. For the world, she lived the life of a Barbie. Her death was due to Barbiturate.

  1. Diana, Princess of Wales

Background:

Lady Diana’s Bhrigu Bindu is in her 12th house of sorrow, overseas connections and fear from foes. The Lord of the 12H is in the 9H of long journeys and connected with Rahu the co-lord of the 3H of leaving home. Further the Lord of the 12H is also the lord of the 5H in the 9H of fortune.  Her 3H, 9H and 12H are well connected. Her romantic interest (5H) was connected to her good fortune and also to her sorrow and travels. From the time of her marriage in July, 1981 till her separation in December, 1992 she travelled, very intensively, all over the world to just about every country.  In 1991 she had 391 engagements around the world.  Her work on the landmines issue has been described as influential in the signing of the Ottawa Treaty (3H,9H,Mars,Rahu) which created an international ban on the use of anti-personnel landmines.

Interpretation:

  • Rudra – the lord of storms:  Lady Diana’s marriage (Sun in the 7H in Ardra and & Mercury® also in Ardra) triggered off the storm in her life. A stormy marriage, stormy affairs and also capturing the imagination of billions – taking the world by storm (7H of Padh Prapti)
  • Parental issues/namelessness: Lady Diana’s parent separated when she was just eight.  Born as Diana Frances, she was later known by many royal titles : The Honourable Diana Frances Spencer, Lady Diana Frances Spencer, Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Rothesay, Diana, Princess of Wales and her official title : Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, Duchess of Rothesay, Countess of Chester.

Posthumously, as in life, she is most popularly referred to as “Princess Diana”, a title not formally correct and one she never held. She is still sometimes referred to in the media as “Lady Diana Spencer” or simply as “Lady Di”.

  • Associated with physical work:  Lady Diana was interested in music and dancing and trained in classical ballet. She reportedly excelled in swimming, diving and hockey, her foremost passion was ballet. She studied ballet and longed to become a ballerina for a time.  “When I am older, I will be a dancer,” she once said.  But alas she grew to a height of 5’10” and became too tall to become a professional. Diana was honoured for winning countless swimming competitions. She also played tennis and was an accomplished skier.
  • Defy Tradition:  Much is written about how Lady Diana defied tradition and royalty. However, this one says it all: “Diana was chaste till she married Charles; after two children, she turned Charles chaste while she went on an international romp that sent media into hysterics, and threatened the British royal family with the prospect of its first child with Arab blood. (The rest of the defiance is unsuitable for an assignment in astrology – but for those still interested the hyperlink may be followed)
  • Sense of Humour/creates an atmosphere of humour:  In an interview rehearsal she was asked why she was focusing on charity work. She said, ‘because I have nothing else to do’! This video, The Funny Lady Diana , says it all. Not for nothing did Prime Minister Tony Blair call her the Peoples’ Princess
  • Diamonds associated with Ardra :

Her Tiara had diamonds!

  • Human symbol is the head: Lady Diana was the world’s most photographed face. “Her face will dazzle for decades, like Marilyn Monroe’s, and never grow old”.
