Chart Analysis:

  1. Margaret Thatcher:

(Stop the mad axe woman campaign against Margaret Thatcher)

Tvastar: “She showed her mettle by crushing a year-long strike by the powerful mineworkers’ union in 1984-85, a victory that did much to reshape the economic and social order of Britain. It was a defining moment in British industrial relations, and the union’s defeat significantly weakened the British trade union movement and the Thatcher government was able to consolidate its economically liberal programme”

Background:

Sun in Chitra: According to Anna Winston, the former prime minister’s impact on the architecture profession was huge. The privatization of local authority services led to the U.K. becoming one of the largest export markets for private architectural services. The Big Bang or deregulation of the financial sector in 1986 led to an increased demand for office space and a design response to cultural shifts toward consumerism.

Interpretation:

  • Smug and arrogant nature: In 1948 she applied for a job at ICI, but was rejected after the personnel department assessed her as “headstrong, obstinate and dangerously self-opinionated”
  • Excellent conversationalists: The local party selected her as its candidate because, though not a dynamic public speaker, Roberts (Thatcher) was well-prepared and fearless in her answers; another prospective candidate recalled that “Once she opened her mouth, the rest of us began to look rather second-rate”.
  • Spica – the lonely star:

Indeed, there was outrage from some Tories when actress Meryl Streep portrayed her as lost and confused in the Oscar-winning movie The Iron Lady. But in truth they tell us far more about the sad and lonely existence of the most divisive figure in British political history.

  • Issues with father: Yet, for all that she admired him and was inspired by him; life under his roof could be remarkably grim. Alf Roberts may have had a healthy income and high status in the town but he was extremely mean. The family lived in uncomfortably constricted accommodation. Even the outside lavatory was not unusual at that time. But the failure to install running hot water and the meagreness and dullness of the food they ate were her father’s choice, not necessity. Alf prided himself on selling quality produce, but the quality was enjoyed by his customers, not by his loved ones. Conspicuous consumption was frowned upon, too, by the family’s severe brand of religion. Even the cotton used to tack up the hems of the girls’ dresses was re-used
  • Tantra & Black Magic: The Iron Lady, who was renowned for her no-nonsense direct approach, conversed with self-proclaimed faith healer and preacher Sri Chandraswamy in 1975 in her Commons office. And the future Prime Minister was so impressed with his apparent powers that she agreed to his request to wear a special red dress and a battered talisman around her wrist to a second meeting. There, it is claimed the bearded guru correctly predicted that she would come to power within four years and remain there for more than a decade. Details of the extraordinary meetings were revealed by former Indian Foreign Minister Shri Natwar Singh, who was present when they took place.

  1. Frank Sinatra:

Frank Sinatra’s Song: That old black magic has me in its spell; That old black magic that you weave so well; Those icy fingers up and down my spine; The same old witchcraft when your eyes meet mine

Background:

Issues with children: Frank Sinatra had many close relationships throughout his life. He was married four times, and had at least six other notable relationships in between. Sinatra had three verified children, as well as one who claimed to be Sinatra’s child but whose parenthood had not been verified and one potentially his but of uncertain parentage.

Interpretation:

  • Craftsmanship in making vehicles: Frank Sinatra was a die-hard model train aficionado who had a lifelong fascination with collecting and operating engines. Another often-heard tale has Frank and various friends jumping aboard a streetcar every now and then and traveling the dozen miles or so to the Lionel train factory where they would rummage thru the trash bins after hours in search of discarded train parts. From the parts, they would cobble together whole trains.
  • Bright beautiful eyes: ‘But he was handsome, with his thin, boyish face, bright blue eyes and incredible grin. When Sinatra came out of retirement in 1973, he released both an album and appeared in a TV special named “Ol’ Blue Eyes Is Back”.
  • Excellent conversationalists: Frank Sinatra was the epitome of American male coolness. When he walked into any room, his confident swagger created an electric charge. Women wanted to be with him and men wanted to be him. Part of Sinatra’s manly and cool presence came from the way he talked. See, Frank had a way of livening up every part of life, even the English language. He peppered casual conversations with phrases and words that to the uninitiated sounded like a bunch of gibberish. Yet it left people intrigued, and wanting to be part of the seemingly exclusive fraternity that used this secret lingo. It not only created a magnetic attraction, but simply sounded damn cool.
  • Smug and arrogant nature: Sinatra had several violent confrontations, usually with journalists who he felt had crossed him or work bosses he had disagreements with.
  • One child rises to great heights: Frank Sinatra had 3 children all of whom (Nancy, Frank Jr. and Tina) were reasonable well known. However, of the 3 Nancy Sinatra went on to become a well-known singer and actress. (PS: Sinatra had two unverified children whose identities are not known. Perhaps, they rose to even greater heights!)
  • Strong sexual desire due to female tiger element: He first had sex at 13. Girls called him Little Frankie but when the news got out about what he called Big Frankie his popularity spread. One childhood acquaintance quoted by Porter talks of him “taking them into back alleys and making them scream, their screeches competing with those of the stray cats”. He boasted that by the time he was 15 he was seeing “young housewives whose husbands weren’t satisfying them”. He claimed to charge five dollars a time.

  1. Sidney Poitier:

(Bright colourful clothing!)

The Measure of a Man: A Spiritual Autobiography is an autobiographical work by Sidney Poitier. On January 26, 2007, Oprah Winfrey chose it for her book club.

Background:

Fought powerful opponents:  “Sam was one of the most powerful men in the entire industry. And having gone public with the news that I may play the Porgy role, he had put himself on the line. (Oprah) And he could not be embarrassed. (Sidney) He wouldn’t have stood for it. So I got a call from Hedda Hopper [the famous Hollywood columnist]. She said, “I know Sam, and he’s in a tough position. If you don’t do his picture, he’ll see to it that you never work in this town again.” (Sidney) So I had a lot of thinking to do, and I agonized. And I couldn’t come to a conclusion. Finally, Marty and I came up with the only thing I could do, because I wanted to do The Defiant Ones. I did one movie, Porgy and Bess, so I could do the other. It was painful, but it was useful. I learned some lessons, and if I had it to do again, I wouldn’t do it any differently, because I had work to do.

Interpretation:

  • True beauty hidden under tamas needs to be sculpted out: “He came up on the stage, furious, and grabbed me by the scruff of my pants and my collar and marched me toward the door, ” the actor remembered to Los Angeles Times writer Champlin. “Just before he threw me out he said, ‘Stop wasting people’s time! Why don’t you get yourself a job as a dishwasher. Poitier knew he had to prove his antagonist wrong. “I have, and had, a terrible fierce pride, ” Poitier told the audience at the American Film Institute fête, as reported by Daily Variety. “I determined right then I was going to be an actor.” Poitier continued in his dishwashing job; in his spare time he listened assiduously to radio broadcasts. “He had some help in one aspect of his informal education, however: Daily Variety quoted his speech at the AFI banquet, in which he thanked “an elderly Jewish waiter in New York who took the time to teach a young black dishwasher how to read, persisting over many months.” Ultimately, Poitier returned to the American Negro Theater, persuading its directors to hire him as a janitor in exchange for acting lessons.

Poitier understudied for actor-singer Harry Belafonte in a play called Days of Our Youth, and an appearance one night led to a small role in a production of the Greek comedy Lysistrata. Poitier, uncontrollably nervous on the latter play’s opening night, delivered the wrong lines and ran off the stage; yet his brief appearance so delighted critics, most of whom otherwise hated the production that he ended up getting more work. “I set out after that to dimensionalize my understanding of my craft,” he told Champlin.

  • Punya Chayani Shakti: (Sidney Poitier to Oprah Winfrey):  “We should not limit it to two generations. I have to accept that my contribution to the man that I have become was a small one. The gift made to my mother, which manifested in me, could have been lying in dormancy across generations. Because let me tell you, my dear—there is something about you that didn’t just happen when your father’s sperm hit your mother’s egg. The sperm and egg carry a history that includes generations you don’t know. (Take a person like Stevie Wonder, who was blind from a young age. Where did his gifts come from? His mother? They came through her. And it is conceivable that 5, 10 or 20 generations ago there was someone with an extraordinary gift in Stevie’s family, but the external circumstances of that person’s life were such that they never gave rise to the gift’s blossoming.) Oprah: Because it takes a combination of forces to bring out gifts. Sidney: Exactly. One day, it happens: Each of us is an accumulated effort unfolding.
  • Father’s objections: Oprah: “In Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, it felt as if you wrote that speech your character says to his father, who objects to your character marrying a white woman. Do you remember the speech?
  • Chitragupta is the keeper of Akashic records: (Sidney Poitier) “I’ve read so many books on astronomy. I’ve also read Aristotle and Plato”. (Oprah) “And you didn’t have any formal education, right?”
  • Doting Parent: Poitier also went on to praise his daughters, who have gone on to appear in film and TV (Sydney recently was seen on Hawaii Five-0, while Anika is now a film director). But the two women acknowledged that their dad would have preferred them to pursue other professions — “doctors, lawyers, anything” other than actresses. “We’re blessed to have him as a dad,” Sydney said. “The world knows him as this iconic, legendary, historical figure. But he’s also just a really, really good dad.”
  • Bright Eyes well-proportioned  body:
