Chart Analysis:

  1. Frank Sinatra:

That old black magic has me in its spell; That old black magic that you weave so well; Those icy fingers up and down my spine; The same old witchcraft when your eyes meet mine

Background:

If, as Norman Mailer once observed, the dream life of America is made up of a “concentration of ecstasy and violence”, Sinatra is surely that dream life personified. His relationship with killers and extortionists, though unfortunate, has become the stuff of myth and his music is curiously shaded by its seedy implications.

Interpretation:

  • Can create mass hysteria: By May 1941, Sinatra topped the male singer polls in Billboard and Down Beat magazines. His appeal to bobby soxers, as teenage girls of that time were called, revealed a whole new audience for popular music, which had been recorded mainly for adults up to that time. The phenomenon became officially known as “Sinatramania” after his “legendary opening” at the Paramount Theatre in New York on December 30, 1942.According to Nancy Sinatra, Jack Benny later said, “I thought the goddamned building was going to cave in. I never heard such a commotion. All this for a fellow I never heard of.
  • Eccentric and mystical: Sinatra did not serve in the military during World War II. On December 11, 1943, he was officially classified 4-F (“Registrant not acceptable for military service”) by his draft board because of a perforated eardrum. However, army files reported that Sinatra was “not acceptable material from a psychiatric viewpoint”, but his emotional instability was hidden to avoid “undue unpleasantness for both the selectee and the induction service”.
  • Extreme and volatile: Sinatra was spotted in Havana in 1946 with mobster Lucky Luciano, which started a series of negative press articles, implicating Sinatra with the Mafia. In 1947 he was involved in a violent incident with journalist Lee Mortimer, who had written some of the most scathing articles on his alleged connections. Kelley claims that his articles grew so offensive that Sinatra pounced on him outside Ciro’s and punched him behind the left ear in response to an insult in which he was called a “dago”. Sinatra was taken to court, and according to Kelley, Mortimer received Mafia threats to drop the case or lose his life.
  • Risk takers and their charming personality gets them out of a tight spot: Sinatra was a performer who divides opinion; his reputed Mafia connections, alongside political flip-flopping (he publicly backed both Democrats and Republicans) suggest Sinatra was a bold risk-taker and ruthless opportunist.
  • Strong Ego: Sinatra was snubbed by Kennedy during his visit to Palm Springs when he decided to stay with the Republican Bing Crosby, due to FBI concerns about Sinatra’s alleged connections to organized crime. Sinatra had invested a lot of his own money in upgrading the facilities at his home in anticipation of the President’s visit, fitting it with a heliport, which he later reportedly smashed up with a sledgehammer upon being rejected.

  1. Albert Einstein:

(The ‘conditions’ placed by Albert Einstein before his wife for continuing their marriage)

In Walter Isaacson’s book, Einstein: His Life and Universe, he is painted as a troubled man, struggling to maintain any semblance of a functioning personal life. Indeed, Isaacson’s claims are supported in letters published by Princeton Press, titled, The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein. In fact, the letters prove very damning for Einstein, revealing a brooding, controlling man whose treatment of his wife, Mileva Maric, was cold, calculating, and often brutal. Before marrying Einstein, Maric gave birth to his daughter, Lieserl, only to put her up for adoption, reputedly due to pressure from the controlling Einstein, who never actually saw his baby daughter. Once married, the couple had two sons, before Einstein embarked on an affair with his cousin, Elsa Lowenthal, eventually marrying his lover. After the divorce, Einstein had very little to do with his sons, as indicated by the elder, Hans Albert. “Probably the only project he ever gave up on was me.”

Background:

Interpretation:

  • Fire breathing dragon:  Albert Einstein had Sun (Fire/Heat/Nuclear Fission) in the star of the Fire Dragon. “At that point, Szilard met with Einstein to write the first and most famous of the Einstein-Szilard letters, warning President Roosevelt about the German efforts to formulate the atomic bomb, and the possible disastrous outcomes should this come to pass. The result was a promise to fund research into nuclear fission, which occasioned the second Einstein-Szilard letter thanking the president.”

(The Trinity fireball, 15 seconds after detonation of the first atomic bomb on July 16, 1945, rises into the air above the desert near the town of San Antonio, New Mexico)

This research led the creation of the nuclear bomb by the United States which was first tested in New Mexico and later lead to the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan.

  • Left handed Tantra: On the 20th Anniversary of Einstein’s death (1975), physicist Richard Feynman was quoted in Time magazine as saying, “I cannot understand how he arrived at the intuition leading to E-mc^2, considering the level of scientific knowledge at the time.”(1905).A niece of Einstein reported that a copy of the Secret Doctrine was always on his desk. I immediately purchased a new facsimile edition of The Secret Doctrine (The Theosophy Company, Los Angeles) with the intention of starting all over. But, this time, specifically to study its deeper scientific teachings with reference to the linkages between consciousness, mind and their associated biological organs and organisms (since most of its teachings in cosmology and physics had already been culled and expanded by Einstein, Planck, Millikan, Heisenberg, Bohr, Gell-Mann, Feynman, Hawking and many others).
  • Eccentric: (a) Einstein resorted to collecting cigarette butts from the streets to circumvent his doctor’s effort to stop him from smoking. (b) Einstein’s grandson recalled receiving a baffling three-hour lecture from Einstein on the mathematical properties of soap bubbles. He was aged eight at the time (c) That afternoon he (Einstein) talked to me (Einstein’s grandson) for the first time ever about physics. He asked me what I knew about energy, but he dropped the question immediately when he realised that I could not discuss the subject on his terms. “That was the last time I saw him.”
  • Constellation of Pegasus: The Einstein Cross is a gravitational lensed quasar that sits directly behind ZW 2237+030, Huchra’s Lens. Four images of the same distant quasar appear around a foreground galaxy due to strong gravitational lensing.

(The Einstein Cross captured in the constellation of Pegasus by the Hubble Space Telescope)

The Einstein Cross can be found in Pegasus at 22h 40m 30.3s, +3° 21′ 31″.

  • Walk to the beats of their own drum (not following societal norms): Einstein was fascinated with bohemian living. Even in early letters to his first wife, he professed that they shouldn’t ever be trapped by society’s expectations. He seemed to love the idea of eschewing what so many wanted. Einstein loved bohemianism, as he found creativity and passion in literature, music, and science. He commingled the three and crafted magical mental imagery of difficult physical constructions. Self-described bohemians were countercultural, just like the beatniks, hippies, and hipsters of generations to come. When traveling to another city, he stayed on an office couch instead of a hotel. His friend said, “This was probably not good enough for such a famous man, but it suited his liking for simple living habits and situations that contravened social conventions.

  1. Tom Hanks:

(Tom Hanks in Castaway – the fire dragon)

I must say that when I go to church—and I do go to church—I ponder the mystery. I meditate on the ‘why?’ of ‘why people are as they are’ and ‘why bad things happen to good people,’ and ‘why good things happen to bad people’ … The mystery is what I think it is, almost, the grand unifying theory of mankind.”

Background:

Hanks supports same-sex marriage, environmental causes, and alternative fuels. Hanks was outspoken about his opposition to the 2008 Proposition 8, an amendment to the California constitution that defined marriage as a union only between a man and a woman. Hanks and others raised over US$44 million to campaign against the proposition, in contrast to the supporters’ $39 million, but Proposition 8 passed with 52% of the vote. While premiering a TV series in January 2009, Hanks called supporters of Proposition 8 “un-American” and criticized the LDS Church members, who were major proponents of the bill, for their views on marriage and role in supporting the bill. A proponent of environmentalism, Hanks is an investor in electric vehicles and owns a Toyota RAV4 EV and the first production AC Propulsion eBox. He was a lessee of an EV1 before it was recalled, as chronicled in the documentary Who Killed the Electric Car?

Interpretation:

  • Fire dragon:  Mars in Purva Bhadrapada. Mars signifies war. Mars is the Lord of the 3H of battles and posited in the 6H of war in Purva Bhadrapada in Aquarius which is owned by Saturn which is also the owner of the 5H. In June 2006, Hanks was inducted as an honorary member of the United States Army Rangers Hall of Fame for his accurate portrayal of a Captain in the movie Saving Private Ryan; Hanks, who was unable to attend the induction ceremony, was the first actor to receive such an honor. In addition to his role in Saving Private Ryan, Hanks was cited for serving as the national spokesperson for the World War II
  • They understand the cosmos: A supporter of NASA’s manned space program, Hanks said he originally wanted to be an astronaut. Hanks is a member of the National Space Society, serving on the Board of Governors of the nonprofit educational space advocacy organization founded by Dr. Wernher von Braun. He also produced the HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon about the Apollo program to send astronauts to the moon. In addition, Hanks co-wrote and co-produced Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D, an IMAX film about the moon landings.Hanks provided the voice over for the premiere of the show Passport to the Universe at the Rose Center for Earth and Space in the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. In 2006, the Space Foundation awarded Hanks the Douglas S. Morrow Public Outreach Award, given annually to an individual or organization that has made significant contributions to public awareness of space programs.
  • Not concerned with societal norms: Hanks married his first wife Samantha Lewes two months after their son Colin’s birth in 1977.
  • Emergency rooms in hospitals:  Hanks is a fan of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and has expressed desire to one day guest star on the show.
