Chart Analysis:

  1. Price Leontyne

Hypnotic eyes /Mascara is a theme of Rohini. Price Leontyne does appear to have hypnotic eyes or snake like eyes and the use of Mascara/eyeliners is prominent across her photos

Background:

Price Leontyne is a Soprano (classical female singing voice with the highest vocal range). The 12th L in the 2nd H (as in this case) makes the native a sweet speaker with an income for foreign countries (Price Leontyne also had a public performance in India in 1956). Bhrigu Bindu in the 12H, with the 12 L in the 2 H (airy sign of Aquarius) with the 5th Lord Venus also in the 2 H of speech does make her an entertainer of global repute in field of singing.

Interpretation:

Price Leontyne has her Moon in Rohini-3 (Venus/Moon/Mercury) in the 5H of entertainment.

  • Good for growth:  Price Leontyne was born to a lumber factory worker and a midwife. From extremely humble beginnings, she rose to be the highest paid Opera Singer in the world and is globally renowned
  • Materialism:  Materialism is a trait identified with Rohini. For singing in the Opera “Aida” she made the producers pay her $ 1 more than the Tenor (the male counterpart of a Soprano) Luciano Pavrotti so that she could claim to be the highest paid Opera singer in the world (though his has been denied by the Metropolitan Opera)
  • Singers/Dancers/TV/Cinema:  Natives of this Nakshatra have talent in singing/dancing. This native’s Moon in Rohini (Mercury Navamsa  – karaka for speech) with the lord of the Rasi in the 2 H as the natural karaka for entertainment (Venus) this talent is abundantly clear
  • Multiple Partners:  Price Leontyne worked with several people who directed her in her musical performances.
  • Keeps growing:  In a Letter to the Editor of Ebony Magazine, a reader wrote: “I believe that her great Soprano has been instrumental in influencing Blacks to becoming familiar with the Grand Opera”. Also, in 2001, at the age of 74 she was pulled out of retirement and asked to sing in the memory of the victims of the 11,September, 2001 attack in the USA

  1. Greta Garbo

There has never been anything false between Greta Garbo and me,” Clarence Sinclair Bull said. But he was curious, as many were, about her famous eyelashes. “At the end of one long sitting, I thought I heard myself say, ‘are they real?’ A slow smile drifted across her mouth, the lashes fluttered – a throaty giggle. ‘What are you talking about, Mr. Bull?’ Are your lashes real?’ ‘Pull them and find out.’” So he did – and they were.

Gimme Red! For some reason many magazine covers with Greta Garbo were in Red – the Red Bull (or the red eye of the bull) of Rohini!

Background:

Greta Garbo, Hollywood actress from the silent era. Greta Garbo’s Lagna and Jupiter (lord of 8 and 11) are in Rohini – giving her a lot of features of this Nakshatra. The Lord of the 8th in the Lagna made Greta Garbo highly secretive in an extremely Public Relations driven industry.  Gulika and Maandi in the Lagna show difficulties in childhood. She was clumsy/unkempt and had a guttural accent. The influence of Rohini in the chart of Greta Garbo was strong enough to pull her out of the rut and make her one of the most enigmatic women of Hollywood.

Interpretation:

Greta Garbo has her Ascendant in Rohini-1 (Venus/Moon/Mars) and Jupiter in Rohini-2 (Venus/Moon/Venus) in the Lagna. Thus, the Lagna is heavily influenced by the features of Rohini.

  • Elegance/Charisma/Sensuality/Expressive Eyes:  Greta Lovisa Gustafson studied at Stockholm’s Royal Dramatic Acting School where she met her mentor, Mauritz Stiller, who entitled her Garbo as it meant elegance in Spanish.  Her mentor’s focus was on her mesmerizing eyes which contributed to her success in the first silent films. She easily progressed towards talking films, seducing the public with her sensual voice and slight Swedish accent. She constructed her public figure as glamorous, mysterious and inaccessible woman, all traits of Rohini.
  • The Glowing One: Greta Garbo was voted as the most beautiful woman in the world in 1950 by the Guinness Book of Records
  • Manipulative:  Had you, in the years up until 1990, when she died at the age of 84, encountered a brusque old lady in a black wig, dark glasses, a turned-up collar and her hat brim pulled down over her face, and who was calling herself either Alice Smith, Mary Jones, Harriet Brown, Fraulein Gussie Berger, Jonas Emersen, Mademoiselle Hanson, or Miss Sorenson – then the chances are you met Greta Garbo.
  • Singers/Dancers/TV/Cinema:  Greta Garbo is one of the greatest actors Hollywood has ever produced
  • Multiple Partners:   Not only did Greta Garbo have multiple partners but she was also bisexual.
  • Keeps growing:  Greta Garbo was born in Stockholm in 1905 as Greta Gustaffson, the daughter of a Lapp peasant and a butcher. She spent her childhood ‘washing dishes, sweeping the stairs and cleaning the outside toilet’. She played a small part in a silent Swedish movie where she was known for her guttural accent/ unkempt hair and clumsy stance. Here she noticed by director Mauritz Stiller who blessed her with Aarohana Shakti – the power to rise!
  • I/Me/Myself: Garbo wouldn’t rehearse with other actors, for example, not even for dance numbers, instead ‘preparing her role in the privacy of her home’. As she put it herself, ‘Yes, I was alone. I always went away alone. That is what I like’. Such was her paranoia for privacy; Garbo would book herself two seats at the theatre, positioned next to the aisle, so she’d have no one next to her.

  1. Martha Graham

The Rajasic quality of passion is a theme for Rohini. Martha Graham (American Modern Dancer and Choreographer) said: “Great dancers are not great because of their technique. They are great because of their passion”. Abundance is another theme of Rohini. This could also mean “practice” (abundance of effort), which was very important for Martha Graham.

Background:

Martha Graham had her Lagna in Rohini-1 (Venus/Moon/Mars) and Jupiter, the Lord of 8 and 11 in Rohini-2 (Venus/Moon/Venus).  She was an exponent of Modern American Dance which is an un-structured dance as against a structured Ballet form of dance.  She has the 5th L of entertainment in the 12th H of feet. The 5th L is Mercury indicating fleetness in movement. She has Venus, the karaka for dance/beauty in the 11th house of gains/regular income with unconventional Rahu (Modern American was considered very unconventional at that time).

Interpretation:

Since Martha Graham had her Jupiter and Lagna in Rohini, the themes of Rohini are strong in her chart.

  • Artistic Expression: Martha Graham was influenced early on by her father, George Graham, a doctor who specialized in nervous disorders. Dr. Graham believed that the body could express its inner senses via physical movement, an idea that intrigued his young daughter. She built on this them into an artistic expression of fluid dance known as the Martha Graham dance form.
  • Aarohana Shakti (ascend to rise) :  When Martha Graham started dancing she was considered too old, too short, too heavy and too homely to be taken seriously. “They thought I was good enough to be a teacher, but not a dancer,” she recalled. But she knew what she wanted to do, and pursued her goal with the intensity that marked her entire life. Dance was her reason for living. Willing to risk everything, driven by a burning passion, she dedicated herself absolutely to her art. “I did not choose to be a dancer,” she often said. “I was chosen.”
  • Manipulative:  Martha Graham was manipulative – but not in the sense of scheming. She exhorting her female dancers to “dance from the vagina”, (the 5th L of entertainment, Mercury, in the 12th H of feet (dance) in the Nakshatra of Bharani (Yoni) — “Martha’s premise was that an act of lovemaking was an act of murder,” remembers one — her works contained powerful depictions of seduction, rape and killing.
  • Singers/Dancers/TV/Cinema:  Martha Graham was one of the greatest ever exponent of Modern American dance.
  • Beauty, Sensuality, Charisma:”Her dance language was intended to express shared human emotions and experiences, rather than merely provide decorative displays of graceful movements. The dances were also intended to evoke a visceral response in the audience rather than be comprehended in primarily linear or pictorial terms. Many of her dances feature forceful, angular movements originating in spasms of muscular contraction and release centred in the dancer’s pelvis. These expressive contractions help generate the strong sexual tension that is a feature of so many of Graham’s works.
  • Keeps growing:  Graham has been sometimes termed the “Picasso of Dance” in that her importance and influence to modern dance can be considered equivalent to what Pablo Picasso was to modern visual arts. Martha Graham has been said to be the one that brought dance into the 20th century. An entire movement was created by her that revolutionized the dance world and created what is known today as modern dance.
  • Connection with Krishna:   In 1925, Graham was employed at the Eastman School of Music where Rouben Mamoulian was head of the School of Drama. Among other performances, together Mamoulian and Graham produced a short two-colour film called The Flute of Krishna
