Chart Analysis:

  1. Abraham Lincoln:

On an occasion President Lincoln prefaced a discussion of the draft Emancipation Proclamation by reading aloud from a favourite humourist. In response to the disapproval of some members of his cabinet, Mr. Lincoln said: “Gentlemen, why don’t you laugh? With the fearful strain that is upon me night and day, if I did not laugh I should die, and you need this medicine as much as I do.”1

An Indiana Congressman, George W. Julian, recalled that President Lincoln “entered into the enjoyment of his stories with all his heart, and completely lived over again the delight he had experienced in telling them on previous occasions. When he told a particularly good story, and the time came to laugh, he would sometimes throw his left foot across his right knee, and clenching his foot with both hands and bending forward, his whole frame seemed to be convulsed with the effort to give expression to his sensations…I believe his anecdotes were his great solace and safeguard in seasons of severe mental depression.”


Background:

Without question Lincoln was subject to periods of melancholy throughout his life. His own term for it was “the hypo” (short for hypochondriasis). Lincoln was probably a believer in the doctrine of fatalism. Additionally, he was somewhat superstitious. However, his ability to cope with whatever depression afflicted him, especially late in life, was enormous. Using various means… work, humour, fatalistic resignation, or even religious feelings… he generally did not allow the depression or melancholy to interfere with his work as president. He overcame this depressive aspect of his personality with a powerful inner strength and will.

Interpretation:

  • Honour and respect like the cow: The research on leadership is clear: personal example is the most powerful human resource available to lead an organization. In the case of Abraham Lincoln, it was his personal behaviour, his character, his story that has brought so many individuals, worldwide, to the study of his life. As Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy said, “His example is universal and will last thousands of years… and as a great character he will live as long as the world lives
  • Children/Grandchildren:  President Lincoln had his 5L Venus in Uttara Bhadrapada which signifies many children and grandchildren. However, Venus is posited in the 3H of breaks and conjoined with Jupiter the Lord 12H of loss and the 3H of breaks. Lincoln had 4 children 3 of who did not survive beyond their teens. 
  • Freshness and new perspective: Mr. Lincoln’s judgment was not infallible but it was perceptive. In some respects he is a singular man and not fully understood. He has great sagacity and shrewdness, but sometimes his assertion or management is astray. When he relies on his own right intentions and good common sense, he is strongest. Robert L. Wilson knew Mr. Lincoln three decades earlier in Sangamon County: “His practical common sense, his thorough knowledge of human nature made him an overmatch for his compeers, and for any man that I have ever known”
  • Warrior Nakshatra: Lincoln also struggled to find a commander who would attack the Confederates aggressively. In Ulysses S. Grant, the president found his man. Lincoln named Grant commander of all federal armies in March 1864. With Lincoln’s support, Grant pursued a policy of total war — attacking not only Confederate soldiers but also the Southern economy. Destroying Southern cities, farms, and factories, Lincoln and Grant understood, would destroy Southerners’ will to fight. By the fall of 1864, with Grant winning battles and the tide of war turning, Lincoln won re-election. In his campaign, he promised to pursue a policy of bringing the Southern states back into the Union and ending slavery forever. But to pursue these policies effectively, Lincoln needed Grant to win the war. Grant gave his commander- in-chief the victory he needed.

  1. Jane Fonda:

Fitness guru Jane Fonda is well known not only for being an Academy Award winning actress, but also for being an advocate of keeping fit and healthy in later life. Fonda has always had the mantra that exercise does not have to be scary or painful, and yoga is a great way to enhance your energy, build strength, increase flexibility and lose weight. 

Background:

Warrior Nakshatra: During the 1960s, Fonda engaged in political activism in support of the Civil Rights Movement, and in opposition to the Vietnam War. Fonda’s visits to France brought her into contact with leftist French intellectuals who were opposed to war, an experience that she later characterized as “small-c communism”. Along with other celebrities, she supported the Alcatraz Island occupation by American Indians in 1969, which was intended to call attention to failures of the government in treaty rights and the movement for greater Indian sovereignty.

Interpretation:

  • Shakti Basis Desire:  Stability of the three worlds. Jane Fonda played the lead role in Barbarella. In this movie which is set sometime in the distant future, a young Earth woman, Barbarella (played by Jane Fonda), is sent on a mission to find and stop the evil Durand Durand, who has developed a weapon capable of destroying the world. In her quest to find him, she encounters some weird and wonderful people and creatures and has some interesting adventures.

  • The snake sheds its skin through painful life experiences: “I feel joyful more often now than I did in my 20’s or 30’s . . . and most definitely more often than in my 40’s. 40’s can be really hard for women because we’re moving into a momentous, tectonic shift, a hormonal shift that for –not all, but many– women, can feel like we’ve lost ourselves and may never get those selves back. Truth be known, we don’t get those selves back. But the selves we do get back can be better, braver and surer. We care less what others think of us. We tend to be kinder to ourselves. We stress less. We see commonalities between ourselves and others more than differences. We’re more forgiving, less judgmental.”
  • Lives in streams of mid-air/calm composed disposition: 

MP: How do you process pain when it comes in?

JF: I meditate.

MP: Is there a particular type of meditation that you practice?

JF: Zen Buddhist meditation. Mindlessness.

MP: What is the love of your life?

JF: Hiking at 14,000 feet

  • Not sexually active but has a quiet interest:  Suddenly, her beloved husband — with whom she was trying to conceive a baby — was asking her to be his sexual accomplice. But she felt she had no choice. For all his faults, he gave her much-needed emotional security. So, again, she said nothing. ‘He validated me. I couldn’t conceive of leaving him,’ she recalls. She raised no objection when he brought home a call girl from the most elegant brothel in Paris — instead welcoming her into the marital bed.  ‘I took my cues from him and threw myself into the threesome with the skill and enthusiasm of the actress that I am,’ she says. The couple continued having threesomes throughout most of their marriage.   1. Edgar Cayce:

Fertility/Agriculture: Uttara Bhadrapada is connected with fertility and with agriculture. Sun (father) is in Uttara Bhadrapada. Edgar Cayce’s father (parents) was a farmer

Background:  

2L Sun (eyes) in Uttara Bhadrapada (deep sea serpent).  The ruling planet Saturn is in the 8H of Occult with Mercury the 12L of sleep. Mercury is also the karaka for speech. Edgar Cayce, when he slept, could dive deep into his sub-consciousness could ‘see’ the future which he narrated to a note taking assistant.  

Interpretation:

  • Pralaya:  The asterism of Uttara Bhadrapada is indicative of Pralaya. In his trance, Edgar Cayce described the end of Atlantis. “According to Cayce, it was the abuse of the use of this crystal as an energy source that led Atlantis to the loss. As it seems, his readings suggest that the Atlanteans were using these crystals especially for torturing their peers. What is certain is that they knew to the end a form of energy which remains unknown to us today. We can also see, by reading the Cayce readings, that the level of technology was also developed as ours today, if not higher.” Edgar Cayce’s predictions on the end of the world are well known.  He predicted a major global change in 1998.  He explained that the Sphinx had been built in 10,500 B.C.E. and that survivors of Atlantis had concealed beneath it a Hall of Records containing all the wisdom of their lost civilization
  • Work in silence: Go into silence, which is…begin with ten or fifteen minutes, then increase to an hour, sit well up in the chair with both hands on the knees and relieve the mind of everything. ~ from Edgar Cayce reading 599-1
  • Ouroboras Infinitum (cyclical):  The concept of past-present familiarity was exhibited in one of Edgar Cayce’s own remarkable dreams after Cayce moved Virginia Beach, Virginia. The dream was brief. He was on a train but got left behind. When a reading was taken to interpret the dream, a remarkable reading of Cayce’s soul was described. Three hundred years earlier to the very day he had landed by ship at this very location that became Virginia Beach. The soul had returned to a familiar location with a fresh challenge. 
  • Early retirement from worldly duties: In 1900 (age: 23), Cayce formed a business partnership with his father to sell Woodmen of the World Insurance; however, in March he was struck by severe laryngitis that resulted in a complete loss of speech. Unable to work, he lived at home with his parents for almost a year. He then decided to take up the trade of photography, an occupation that would exert less strain on his voice. He began an apprenticeship at the photography studio of W.R. Bowles in Hopkinsville, and eventually became quite talented in his trade. Cayce’s work grew in volume as his fame grew. He asked for voluntary donations (1912: age 35) to support himself and his family so that he could practice full-time. To help raise money he invented “Pit”, a card game based on the commodities trading at the Chicago Board of Trade, and the game is still sold today. He continued to work in an apparent trance state with a hypnotist all his life. His wife and eldest son later replaced Layne in this role. A secretary, Gladys Davis, recorded his readings in shorthand.
