Chart Analysis:

  1. Abraham Lincoln:

(Harold von Schmidt painted the drawing of Lincoln wrestling Armstrong for Esquire in 1949)

Lincoln led the United States through its Civil War—its bloodiest war and an event often considered its greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis. In doing so, he preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy.

Background:

Non-committal: Lincoln’s first romantic interest was Ann Rutledge, whom he met when he first moved to New Salem; by 1835, they were in a relationship but not formally engaged. She died at the age of 22 on August 25, 1835.In the early 1830s, he met Mary Owens from Kentucky when she was visiting her sister. Late in 1836, Lincoln agreed to a match with Mary if she returned to New Salem. Mary did return in November 1836, and Lincoln courted her for a time; however, they both had second thoughts about their relationship. On August 16, 1837, Lincoln wrote Mary a letter suggesting he would not blame her if she ended the relationship. She never replied and the courtship ended. In 1840, Lincoln became engaged to Mary Todd, who was from a wealthy slave-holding family in Lexington, Kentucky. They met in Springfield, Illinois, in December 1839 and were engaged the following December. A wedding set for January 1, 1841, was cancelled when the two broke off their engagement at Lincoln’s initiative. They later met again at a party and married on November 4, 1842, in the Springfield mansion of Mary’s married sister. While preparing for the nuptials and feeling anxiety again, Lincoln, when asked where he was going, replied, “To hell, I suppose.”

Interpretation:

  • Battles pride, ego, lust: Commonly known as Honest Abe, The Washington Times referred to Abraham Lincoln as decent, kind, sensitive, compassionate, honest and empathetic. The former president has also been called guarded, patient, energetic and easy going, according to The Lincoln Institute. The man was considered simple, pure and sincere by many
  • Teeth: Lincoln had this 6L and his 8L in the 2H of teeth. In a letter to Mary Speed, dated September 27, 1841, Lincoln wrote “Do you remember my going to the city while I was in Kentucky, to have a tooth extracted, and making a failure of it? Well, that same old tooth got to paining me so much, that about a week since I had it torn out, bringing with it a bit of the jawbone; the consequence of which is that my mouth is now so sore that I can neither talk, nor eat. I am literally ‘subsisting on savoury remembrances’—that is, being unable to eat, I am living upon the remembrance of the delicious dishes of peaches and cream we used to have at your house.” After this experience, Lincoln reportedly suffered from dental anxiety and avoided seeing a dentist.
  • Deep humanitarian concern and fairness: Abraham Lincoln favored women’s rights in an era where they could not vote. On June 13, 1836, Lincoln wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper called the Sangamo Journal. He said, “I go for admitting all whites to the right of suffrage who pay taxes or bear arms – by no means excluding females.”
  • Wrestling: While living at New Salem Lincoln wrestled Jack Armstrong. Although Lincoln’s wrestling ability was excellent, he wasn’t unbeatable. On April 22, 1832, Lincoln was thrown in two straight falls by Lorenzo Dow Thompson during a wrestling match in Beardstown, Illinois.
  • Elephants: After Lincoln was elected president the King of Siam offered him a gift of elephants. The King said that “elephants being animals of great size and strength can bear burdens through un-cleared woods and matted jungles where no carriage and cart roads have yet been made.” However, Lincoln politely declined the offer.

  1. Jane Fonda:

(Her doctor said she has the body of a 50 year old. Did she borrow Soma from Indra or was it the Red Bull!)

She returned to acting with her first film in 15 years with the 2005 comedy Monster in Law. Subsequent films have included Georgia Rule (2007), The Butler (2013) and This Is Where I Leave You (2014). In 2009, she returned to Broadway after a 45-year absence, in the play 33 Variations, which earned her a Tony Award nomination, while her recurring role in the HBO drama series The Newsroom (2012-2014), has earned her two Emmy Award nominations. She also released another five exercise videos between 2010 and 2012. She currently stars with Lily Tomlin and Martin Sheen in the Netflix original series Grace and Frankie (2015).

Background:

Lobbyists: Veteran actress Jane Fonda personally lobbied former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s in a bid to end hunger strikes in Northern Ireland. According to newly-released files from Belfast Public Records Office, the Barbarella star sent a telegram to Thatcher in May, 1981, urging the leader to reclassify all Irish republican inmates as political prisoners after a series of mass protests. The message from Fonda stated, “Please save the lives of the hunger strikers by granting them political status. The sanctity of human life must override any political considerations.” Jane Fonda also lobbied against the Vietnam War with the US Government

Interpretation:

  • War/battle/arguments: She was born Lady Jayne Seymour Fonda, but earned her reputation as “Hanoi Jane” Fonda after “aiding and abetting” the enemy — North Vietnam.

(Hanoi Jane on North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun: A few hundred yards from the location of this photograph, American POWs were being subjected to all manner of torture at the “Hanoi Hilton.”)

Col. Roger Ingvalson, whose aircraft was shot down by an NVA-AAG similar to the gun Hanoi Jane is straddling. Hanoi Jane laughing it up. Showing her admiration Fonda called returning POWs “hypocrites and liars,” adding, “These were not men who had been tortured. These were not men who had been starved. These were not men who had been brainwashed. Pilots were saying it was the policy of the Vietnamese and that it was systematic. I believe that’s a lie.”

  • Teeth: Not long ago, Jane Fonda gave a British interviewer a clue as to how she manages to look so young at her advanced age. During the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, the septuagenarian actress and fitness guru said to a journalist from the London-based Daily Mail, “See these teeth?

They cost $55,000. It was teeth or a new car — and I opted for the teeth.”

  • Varna Kshatriya/Purushartha Moksha: Jane Fonda intensely battled the American Government for its war in Vietnam. In April 1970, Fonda, with Fred Gardner and Donald Sutherland formed the FTA tour (“Free The Army”,an anti-war road show. The tour visited military towns along the West Coast, with the goal of establishing a dialogue with soldiers about their upcoming deployments to Vietnam. The dialogue was made into a movie (F.T.A.) which contained strong, frank criticism of the war by servicemen and servicewomen; it was released in 1972. On the other hand her interaction with religion was also strong. “I began to really study it [Christianity], and I thought, uh-oh, I don’t know. There are a lot of problems I have here with this Christianity. Maybe I’ve made a mistake. I’m a feminist. But I’m on a journey. KING: “You’re not a born again?” FONDA: “I don’t even know what that means.” KING: “Do you read your Bible?” FONDA: “I read everything from Robert Graves’ ‘King David’ to the ‘Gnostic Gospels‘ to the Book of John [the Gnostic version?].’ I read a lot. I’m on a journey.
  • Male Mongoose (no commitment to partners): Fonda has been married three times—all of these unions ended in divorce. Her marriage to Vadim lasted from 1965 to 1973. Then she married activist and politician Tom Hayden in 1973.  After divorcing Hayden in 1989, Fonda soon found love with media mogul Ted Turner. Married in 1991, the pair stayed together for a decade. The couple divorced in 2001, reportedly over Fonda’s newfound Christian faith. These days Fonda has been dating music producer Richard Perry.
